Selinunte & the Press Mill |
|
| You will be welcomed at the pier by your English speaking guide and get on board the comfortable coach and leave Trapani driving on the motor-way first towards Segesta and then continue inland and through the Belice Valley before reaching one of the most important Greek colonies in Sicily, Selinunte.
A vast archaeological area, one of the most outstanding in Italy, sited on the southwest coast. Founded in the second half of the 7th century B.C. by Greek settlers from Megara Iblea, it took its name from the Selinos river. The acropolis stood on the sheer cliff area and the city itself inland on Manuzza Hill. You shall visit three temples situated on the eastern hill: Temple G, one of the biggest of antiquity, maybe dedicated to Apollon, temple E, built in perfect Doric style, would have been dedicated to Hera or Aphrodite and the ruins of temple F, dedicated to Athena, completely destroyed.
After the visit, you will be driven towards Castelvetrano reaching the estate, situated in the gentle uplands of south-western Sicily; it is an ideal location for growing olives: Sixty acres of groves roll away behind high walls surrounding the estate. Begin your visit to the olive mill and learn about the making of “Olio Verde”, his luscious extra virgin olive oil. Then, enjoy an Olive Oil tasting with Castelvetrano’s unique whole wheat bread, called pane nero, drizzled with some fresh, deeply green and peppery Olio Verde Novello and aperitif.
After the visit, you will be driven back to Trapani.
